Subventions et des contributions :
Subvention ou bourse octroyée s'appliquant à plus d'un exercice financier (2017-2018 à 2018-2019).
The requested funding for the proposed NSERC Engage project will allow the principal investigator, thex000D
industrial partner (Meridian Lightweight Technologies), and Highly Qualified Personnel to investigate andx000D
develop engineering models of the self-piercing riveting (SPR) system to join Magnesium components to otherx000D
Magnesium components or dissimilar metals. This collaborative investigation is necessary due to challengesx000D
and lack of success which the industrial partner has had in achieving SPR for Magnesium components.x000D
Investigations will be completed, in a collaborative effort between the academic research team and thex000D
industrial partner, to experimentally assess the mechanical material behaviour of base SPR materials.x000D
Additionally, in a similar approach, efforts will be undertaken to investigate deformation and mechanicalx000D
behaviour of the SPR components during the riveting process.x000D
Information from the experimental portion of this project will be used to develop and validate finite elementx000D
models of the SPR system. This model will then be further used by the academic research team to explorex000D
design modifications to improve and enhance the joining of components, specifically components involvingx000D
Magnesium alloys, using the SPR method.x000D
It is anticipated that the proposed NSERC Engage project will result in the development of information whichx000D
will allow the industrial partner to implement a SPR into challenging lightweight materials, potentiallyx000D
resulting in Meridian Lightweight Technologies becoming a world leader in joining of lightweight materials forx000D
numerous practical applications.
