The dynamic optimization of timing systems advanced by Litens Automotive allow the combustion engines tox000D
achieve long durability and improved fuel efficiency. The belt tensioner consist of a pulley bore surface slidingx000D
against the clutch wire. The material selection requirements for the pulley are stringent. First the steel must bex000D
easy to machine but at the same time it must be wear resistant.x000D
Currently a nitriding treatment is applied to ASTM 1045 grade steel used in manufacturing of the pulley. Thisx000D
proposal seeks to find a heat treatment procedure that will substitute the nitriding process and hence will allowx000D
Litens to manufacture components in a faster way and more cost effectively. This is important to increase thisx000D
Canadian company's international competitiveness. The project will consist of new heat treatment proceduresx000D
with varying degrees of difficulty and evaluate the wear resistance under dry sliding conditions and by usingx000D
solid lubricants. The results will contribute to development of a specific component but are also important tox000D
understand the tribological performance of heat treated low carbon steels.
