The mission and vision of Mondias Naturals Inc (MNI) is to commercialize evidence-based botanicalx000D
antimicrobial products for the residential, organic and commercial agricultural markets. Mondias has identifiedx000D
several herb extracts including CELEX07 that have antimicrobial activity. The previous NSERC-ENGAGEx000D
proposal (Application number 506182-16) was related to the needs of the industrial partner MNI to evaluate thex000D
use of plant extracts as biopesticides against economically important diseases of plant crops. The main focus ofx000D
MNI was to obtain information on the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of their botanical aqueousx000D
extracts (BE) prepared from plant roots of Chelidonium majus, (referred to as CELEX 07) against bacterial andx000D
fungal pathogens of tomato, tobacco and lettuce young plants, and compare CELEXT07 efficacy to existingx000D
botanical extracts products found on the market (Yarrow and Thyme flower extracts). The results confirmedx000D
that CELEXT07 applied as soil drench at the MIC 1% concentration showed growth stimulatory effectx000D
(increased plant height and weight) of tobacco and lettuce young plants compared to non-treated plants orx000D
plants treated with a combined dose of yarrow and CELEXT07. Armed with this knowledge, MNI is keen tox000D
address the following questions and objectives through NSERC Engage Plus: (1) What are the activex000D
metabolites of CELEXT07 prepared from root and leaf organs (2) Identify the signatory metabolite groupx000D
responsible for growth stimulation of plants (e.g., phytohormones) and increased resistance (e.g., phenolics)x000D
against selective pathogens. (3) Carry out large-scale greenhouse experiments toevaluate the efficacy ofx000D
CELEXT07 extracts from root vs. leaf for disease suppression of Botrytis cinerea and Xanthomonasx000D
campestris, the causal agents of grey mould and bacterial leaf spots on lettuce, respectively.x000D
The execution of the above objectives will provide Mondias Naturals Inc. an independent assessment andx000D
scientific evidence on the active metabolite in the botanical extract CELEX07 as well as the biotechnologicalx000D
potential to develop a monotherapy-type line of formulations targeted for specific agricultural markets.
