The use of phasor measurement unit (PMU), also known as synchrophasors, for monitoring of electrical powerx000D
system states, stability and health, experiences an increasing growth throughout the world and especially inx000D
North America. The creation of the North American Synchrophasor Initiative (NASPI), for instance, has drawnx000D
the attention of researchers and utilities worldwide and has helped in increasing the quality of research in thatx000D
area. The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Standards Association (IEEE-SA) has issuedx000D
standards on the performance requirements of PMUs and the test equipment required to achieve certification.x000D
These tests as well as the requirements for the test equipment are known to be very stringent. PMUs need to bex000D
very accurate to ensure the best possible visualization of the grid condition and ensure reliability of the futurex000D
advanced controls.x000D
A synergy between Canadian companies, namely Hydro-Quebec's Research institute (IREQ), Vizimax andx000D
OPAL-RT Technologies, have led to interesting developments in the area of synchrophasors. OPAL-RT andx000D
IREQ signed a strategic collaboration agreement for the shared commercialization and development ofx000D
HYPERSIM in 2012. There has also been an agreement between Vizimax and IREQ for the integration ofx000D
estimation algorithms resulting from research at IREQ. The algorithms have been enhanced by Vizimax forx000D
accurate real-time estimation and standard compliance and the resulting PMU is commercialized by Vizimax.x000D
In 2015 and 2016, OPAL-RT has collaborated with VIZIMAX in order to help them prepare for the officialx000D
IEEE certification, by developing the required test rig on their real-time simulation platform HYPERSIM. Thex000D
Vizimax PMU is now the second one worldwide which has passed the certification program. To OPAL-RT,x000D
this consisted in Phase 1 for the development of an integrated test platform and there are multiple other featuresx000D
to develop to make sure the platform can be used for official certification.
