This project will conduct research trials under both laboratory and commercial greenhouse conditions to determine 1) the optimal light levels for the production of some major microgreen crops, 2) light spectra combinations for optimizing microgreen growth, harvest and nutritional quality, and 3) develop feedback control lighting protocols for greenhouse production of microgreens in the Canadian climate. The results can be directly applied by our industry partner, Greenbelt Microgreens, in outfitting their newly acquired greenhouses and renovating their existing facility for microgreen production. The results can also be applied by other greenhouse and indoor farming operations to improve plant growth, enhance nutrient value, save lighting energy consumption and reduce carbon footprint. The results will benefit the Canadian economy within 1-2 years from the start of this project.
