In recent years, Trenchless Technology (TT) methods have assumed an essential role in minimizing disruptionsx000D
to traffic, business and other activities during the construction of transmission pipelines. Due to two majorx000D
factors, which are cost and risk, trenchless methods are only considered in brown field wherever there are nox000D
other feasible options. In residential land development, open cut method is used for the construction of landx000D
infrastructure such as water supply, sewers, power grids and telecommunications. However, in cold region likex000D
Alberta, the construction season for open cut is only 6-7 months each year and land developers generally do notx000D
install shallow utilities during the winter season. The proposed research will investigate the feasibility of usingx000D
TT in residential land development and compare TT and conventional open cut methods in terms of costs,x000D
schedule and Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions. Landmark, the industrial partner of the project, will providex000D
the opportunity of a small-scale field trial in a multi-family residential project. The research team willx000D
investigate applicability of different TT methods in residential land development, analyze the risks associatedx000D
with each TT method, quantify GHG emissions in the construction processes, compare cost and schedule, andx000D
study the social impacts of TT and conventional open-cut method. Using TT in utility pipeline installation hasx000D
the potential to extend the construction season of land infrastructure in cold regions, decrease the project costx000D
and reduce the environment impacts.
