Lumidesign designs and manufactures lighted mirrors, mirror TV's and other architectural metal andx000D
glass-based lighting products. Their most important product series incorporates LED (Light Emitting Diode)x000D
lighting into vanity mirrors and vanity mirror cabinets, representing 16 standard products line for Lumidesign.x000D
These products currently use LED lighting in which a specific portion of the glass mirror sheet is modified tox000D
become non-reflective and is delegated to the light source. LED lighting is placed behind these non-reflectivex000D
portions of the glass mirror sheet to provide illumination emanating from the front of the mirror.x000D
Lumidesign wishes to differentiate their products from the competition in this market by developing ax000D
technology to have the mirror lighting invisibly located behind the mirrored glass surface when the lighting isx000D
not required. Then, when the lighting is turned on, the backlit portions of the mirrored surface are to allow forx000D
light to be efficiently emitted. Lumidesign currently has access to partially-mirrored glass that can achieve thisx000D
effect, however the mirrored finish covering the LED lighting causes substantial light loss and is therefore notx000D
practical.x000D
At McMaster University we have expertise in optical design, optical computer modelling and prototypex000D
development. Specifically, optical coatings and optical films that simultaneously provide a mirror finish andx000D
also act as efficient window materials for LED and OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) light to passx000D
through can be developed. During this project we will develop a solution for Lumidesign that demonstratesx000D
high efficiency mirrored light sources as well as a set of measurements demonstrating the superior energyx000D
efficiency of the result.
