Pyrovac Inc. is a Canadian company based in Quebec which is specialized in the pyrolysis of biomass. As ax000D
technology provider and industrial equipment manufacturer, the company is eager to find new markets for thex000D
biomass-derived pyrolysis products enabled by its pyrolysis process and hence they approached INRS. Typicalx000D
pyrolysis of biomass produces a solid phase called biochar and a liquid phase referred to as wood vinegarx000D
(WV). WV has a rich biochemical composition which can be exploited. In Quebec, resinous wood is ax000D
predominant species and Pyrovac would like to expand usage of its WV natural product in other applicationx000D
domains, such as food applications, biocosmetics or the antimicrobial market. Indeed, antimicrobialx000D
applications represent an unexplored area which has commercial potential and Pyrovac Inc. wishes to explorex000D
this application with INRS-ETE. The main goal of the proposed engage project is the testing of anti-microbialx000D
action of softwood-derived wood vinegar. The project comprises three sub-objectives: a) effect of woodx000D
vinegar on different microorganisms; b) determination of the optimum concentration of the wood vinegar forx000D
an anti-microbial action; and c) evaluation of anti-microbial effectiveness of the optimized wood vinegarx000D
dosage.
