This project explores the use of use of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy to provide uniquex000D
insight into the changes of the composition of organic material in wastewater during treatment. NMRx000D
spectroscopy is a powerful analytical method to acquire molecular-level information regarding the compositionx000D
of complex organic mixtures in a non-selective and fully quantitative manner. The goal of this project is tox000D
explore and develop to use of NMR data as a chemometric fingerprint to quickly estimate the biodegradabilityx000D
of the organic materials present in a waste stream and to identify potentially biologically toxic or inhibitoryx000D
compounds in the complex wastewater mixture. Improved knowledge of the composition of wastewaterx000D
influent based NMR analysis will help Hydromantis improve the quality of the data used to model wastewaterx000D
treatment processes, thereby allowing for improved designs and improved operation. Canada will benefit fromx000D
this research through the development of models of wastewater treatment that will allow for the developmentx000D
of water treatment facilities that are more efficient in their use of energy and other resources and effective inx000D
removing contamination from the environment.
