Automotive Fuel Cell Corporation (AFCC Inc.), located in Burnaby, BC, is a world-leader in the developmentx000D
and commercialization of polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) hydrogen fuel cells for transportationx000D
applications involving partners such as Daimler and Ford. Development of highly-active and durable catalystsx000D
is of great interest to AFCC in order to meet the commercialization targets. The present Engage Plus proposalx000D
stems from and is the continuation of the successful collaboration between the applicant and AFCC, funded byx000D
NSERC Engage. The Engage collaboration revealed new phenomena related to the stability of oxygenx000D
evolution reaction (OER) catalysts in the anode environment of PEM fuel cells. The goal of the Engage Plusx000D
application is to deepen the scientific understanding of the OER catalyst behavior and to develop active andx000D
stable OER catalysts working in concert with the the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts, to improvex000D
the reversal tolerance of PEM fuel cell anodes. This work is important in to support the growth of ax000D
world-leading Canadian clean energy technology company, while also providing excellent training opportunityx000D
for highly qualified personal (HQP). The HQP trained in this project is exposed to a vibrant industrialx000D
collaboration gaining valuable expertise in the fields of applied electrocatalysis, electrochemical science andx000D
surface science characterization of catalysts and fuel cell testing.
