Latium Fleet Management Inc. (http://latiumfleet.com) is a two decades old Edmonton-based company,x000D
offering a variety of fleet-asset services. The Latium platform includes a number of tools that enable thex000D
company's clients to improve the efficiency of their operations, to better plan maintenance tasks, and, morex000D
importantly, to enhance the safety of their vehicle and asset fleets.x000D
The biggest challenge currently facing Latium's ability to expand their client base and their services is the factx000D
that the company employ difficult and expensive to manufacture proprietary hardware devices, which sufferx000D
from limited (wireless) communication capacity, which, in turn, implies that only a fraction of the acquiredx000D
data is communicated to the back-end for analytics.x000D
The proposed project will, first, remove the reliance on proprietary hardware, and, second, enable flexiblex000D
communication capabilities. The enabler of communication flexibility that will be added is device-to-devicex000D
peer-to-peer communication between on-board-units (OBUs) of vehicles of the same fleet. Hence, ax000D
higher-throughput high-latency but inexpensive means of communication will be added to the low-throughputx000D
low-delay but costly communication via cellular/satellite providers. As a result, vehicles will be endowed withx000D
the ability (a) to perform urgent analysis on-board in real-time, and (b) to deliver fine-grained data to thex000D
Latium platform back-end for fleet-level analytics.
