As a response to ever denser cities, high rise buildings have become increasingly popular and are growing tallerx000D
than ever. In addition, there is also a developing trend to use modularization that minimizes the constructionx000D
schedule and thereby reduces costs. A new efficient structural system for high rise building has been developedx000D
called the Super Frame (SF). SF structures divide a building structural system into primary and secondaryx000D
structures. The primary frames of the SF system are composed of vertical legs in each corner of the buildingx000D
which are linked by horizontal diaphragm elements at about every 10 to 20 floors. The primary frames resist allx000D
vertical, wind, and seismic forces as an exterior structure since the vertical elements are concentrated in thex000D
corner areas of the building, maximizing resistance to the wind and seismic forces. The SF concept has beenx000D
recently used in Asia and the Middle East [1]. However, for such buildings to be built in Canada, they mustx000D
conform to Canadian Building Code requirements [2] to ensure their serviceability limit state and ultimate limitx000D
state design under high wind and earthquake loads. The total lateral deformation of the high rise must be underx000D
the Canadian safety limits stated by the code to ensure safety and smooth operation of the high rise building'sx000D
elevators; these benefits will, in turn, be passed onto rate paying customers.x000D
BAH Enterprises is an expert in the field of structural engineering for industrial projects with special emphasisx000D
on powers stations, power plants (gas, coal, nuclear, wind and solar), electrical transmission projects, andx000D
industrial buildings. BAH is interested in using a combined SF system of High Strength Steel (HSS) framesx000D
filled with Ultra High-Performance Concrete (UHPC) for industrial buildings, as they offer numerousx000D
advantages over other design structures, including lower costs, and more efficient use of space. BAH hasx000D
investigated the use of such SF designs for industrial buildings, but a lack a sufficient design model,x000D
particularly seismic modelling, has prevented practical implementation in projects thus far.
