Pega Medical is a medical devices manufacturer dedicated to pediatric orthopaedics. Two of Pega Medical'sx000D
products are the Fassier-Duval Telescopic IM System (FD) and the Simple Locking IntraMedullary Systemx000D
(SLIM) which are a self-extending rod designed to correct deformities and a pin designed to create a stablex000D
fixation in long bones respectively. During surgery, as the anatomy of every patient differs, the implants are cutx000D
at various lengths to get the best fits as possible.x000D
Currently, when implanting the FD, the female component is cut intra-operatively with a diamond-coatedx000D
cutting disc and de-burred with a de-burring tool. The male implant is cut in-situ with a specially designedx000D
cutter. In the case of the SLIM, the hospitals are provided with implants of different lengths and diameters thatx000D
surgeons use as-is in surgery. In order to cover all the cases, this method requires surgeons to have many sets ofx000D
implant ordered and prepared for every intervention and therefore increases the cost of the interventions.x000D
To eliminate the need to have many lengths available during every surgery, a standard length implant could bex000D
used along with a cutting device. This project consists in the conception of this cutting device and will bex000D
realized through three main phases that are the design and fabrication, the testing and validation and thex000D
preparation for manufacturing the device. The benefits that this project will bring are the cost reductions forx000D
the fixation system, but also for the time saved during the interventions and for the simpler inventoryx000D
management. Moreover, Pega will benefit of our expertise and the PIs lab will benefit of an industrialx000D
partnership.
