The Saskatoon Colostrum Company Limited (SCCL) specializes in providing quality colostrum to dairy andx000D
beef producers nationally and internationally. The main metric to assess colostrum quality is immunoglobulinx000D
content, however there are hundreds of additional bioactive molecules such as oligosacchardies in colostrumx000D
and the first milkings of lactation that may improve the health of calves but have yet to be uncovered.x000D
Therefore, the objectives of this project are to characterize the oligosaccharides in colostrum and transitionx000D
milk. Essentially, a blueprint of the prebiotics that should be fed to the calf to develop the gastrointestinalx000D
development and consequently health status, will be determined. The results of this study will provide insightsx000D
into colostrum and transition milk management practices and highlight the value prebiotics in calf feedingx000D
regimens.
