Osorno is dedicated to wastewater treatment and is an owner of one of the oldest packaged sewage treatmentx000D
systems in the world called BioCompact®. The wastewater treatment design used by Osorno has not previouslyx000D
been applied to a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) process. The goal of this project is to investigate thex000D
chemical and biological process kinetics in activated sludge wastewater treatment systems, with the help ofx000D
combined pH-ORP-T sensors. By employing the Intelligent combined pH/ORP/T sensors made by Osornox000D
under the SBR treatment technology, Osorno will have the opportunity to expand their client base regionallyx000D
and their presence across Canada by co-publishing a peer reviewed research paper.x000D
The scope of this project is to perform a bench-scale baseline comparison of the existing SBR treatmentx000D
processe with enhanced nutrient removal by implementing mixing, aeration, and fixed film processx000D
modifications together with advanced on-line measurements, and associated control system, using thex000D
combined pH-ORP-T sensors made by Osorno. We will investigate: 1) operating conditions and wastewaterx000D
character at HWWTF; 2) the operational enhancements for nitrogen, phosphorus removal; the aerationx000D
programming under the different SBR processes 4) the chemical dosing to maintain optimum pH-ORP in thex000D
process; 5) Investigate the automation and controls needed to achieve nutrient removal.x000D
Findings from this research project will provide a much-needed SBR treatment performance baseline withx000D
respect to the process enhancements that are currently only found in the laboratories of research universities inx000D
Canada. With an improved understanding of what specific aspects of SBR chemical and biological treatmentx000D
kinetics are deficient, appropriate process enhancements may result in SBR design upgrades that will allowx000D
smaller population centres to retrofit and operate their existing facilities in a more cost effective manner, whilex000D
satisfying their environmental license effluent limits.
