Phytocannabinoids have received considerable attention due to their potential as therapeutic agents for a widex000D
variety of ailments. Although they are naturally occurring, CMH Biotechnologies Inc. has patented the processx000D
of biocatalysis of cannabinoids using single-celled organisms, thereby producing large amounts of thesex000D
cannabinoids in relatively high purity, which can be used for analytical reference materials and asx000D
pharmaceutical grade cannabinoids. The biosynthesis has been observed to be non-specific with many minorx000D
cannabinoids being produced. The purpose of this Engage grant is to evaluate the structures of these low-levelx000D
metabolites being produced in the biosynthetic pathways and establish whether they are naturally occurring orx000D
novel compounds with potential therapeutic activity. This partnership will combine biotechnology andx000D
advanced analytical chemistry for a better understanding of the impacts on cannabinoid biocatalysis.
