When mine waste materials are exposed to water and air, various potentially harmful elements, such asx000D
selenium, sulfate and nitrate can be released and mobilized with the drainage. Active water treatment forx000D
managing mine drainage poses a long-term challenge to mining companies. A preferable option is to preventx000D
the release of constituents of concern at the source, i.e., source control. The successful implementation ofx000D
source control strategies relies on the availability of essential knowledge on the dynamics of constituent releasex000D
and the key fundamental factors that control the release dynamics. The objective of this research is to developx000D
effective source control strategies to help reduce constituent loading in contact water and ideally to enablex000D
mining companies to reduce the long-term reliance on active water treatment.
