A majority of wastewater treatment plants in Canada are required to remove macronutrients like phosphate andx000D
nitrate to very low levels to avoid nutrient enrichment of receiving water bodies. Currently nitrate andx000D
phosphate are primarily removed from wastewater through biological and chemical processes which arex000D
expensive and have a high carbon and energy footprint. This research will examine an adsorption process usingx000D
a novel biomedia for removal of nitrates, phosphates, as well as arsenic from a synthetic wastewater source.x000D
This research will clarify the areas of application and associated design needs with this novel biomedia. Thus,x000D
if the biomedia is proven to effectively remove these nutrients from wastewater, it will offer an alternativex000D
financially and environmentally beneficial technology to Canadian municipalities and wastewater utilities.
