This project aims to advance the technology relevant to a novel nucleating and reinforcing agent for polylacticx000D
acid (PLA) that was recently developed by the applicant. This 100% bio-based additive (biofiller) addresses thex000D
limitations of existing PLA-modification technologies and has the potential to provide a more cost-effectivex000D
and efficient solution. Specifically, we have proven that our biofiller, when combined with PLA (which is ax000D
bio-based and biodegradable thermoplastic with a significant and growing market), significantly improves itsx000D
processability and properties, including crystallization kinetics, degree of crystallinity, toughness, and rigidity.x000D
These attributes readily translate to enhanced heat resistance of PLA products and reduced processing cyclex000D
times, which are highly sought by the bioplastics industry. In this project we will demonstrate that thisx000D
technology can meet the specifications targeted by PLA processors and that the adoption of this technology willx000D
benefit their businesses in a tangible manner, thus strengthening the opportunities for licensing. This projectx000D
will also serve to broaden the patent claims of our provisional patent application.
