ICC Group is developing a waste to energy process based on gasification technology. The Municipal Solidx000D
Waste is received at the Material Recovery Facility (MRF), where the non-combustible portion of the waste isx000D
removed. The remaining 77% of the material has 24% moisture content. The material is dried with waste heatx000D
from the power plant to 15%. The loose and shredded material can't be used in the existing updraft gasifier.x000D
The feed stock should be pelletized or briquetted. The fixed carbon content of the feedstock after densifying isx000D
8.8% which is very low for the gasification process. Thus, it's needed to mix the densified fuel with wastex000D
wood to increase the fixed carbon content to at least 15%. The objective is to test the Refused Derived Fuelx000D
(RDF) and to investigate parameters involved in making durable pellets from these residues. ICC Group is alsox000D
in need of determining the physical and compositional characteristics of the pellets, as well as in-batch andx000D
batch-to-batch reproducibility. Thus UBC will conduct a series of pelletization tests with different mixturex000D
recipe, pre-conditioning of material as well as adding binders. The produced pellets will then be tested for theirx000D
calorific value, chemical composition, chlorine content and ash content. The produced pellets will then bex000D
tested for durability and hardness. This initial collaborative research and development between ICC Group andx000D
UBC is aimed at establishing a long term research partnership for optimizing the entire continuous process linex000D
for making durable pellets from Refused Derived Fuel (RDF).
