Globally, there is a great demand for low cost and environmentally-friendly battery technologies which couldx000D
be used in a variety of applications such as back-up power and energy storage systems for renewable energyx000D
resources. UBC has been developing a battery technology based om earth-abundant elements (manganese andx000D
zinc) and aqueous electrolytes. The initial performance of this technology has been very promising, however,x000D
further improvements for the cathode electrode (manganese dioxide) is required to improve the energy densityx000D
of the batteries. For this reason, UBC is engaging with Kemetco Research Inc., a local company in Vancouver,x000D
to investigate the impact of various carbon additives int the cathode electrode. Kemetco has been active inx000D
development of a number battery technologies. The proposed project would contribute to the next generation ofx000D
Kemetco Research Inc. rechargeable batteries, which will help the company to retain its high competitivenessx000D
in this growing industrial sector. Furthermore, there is an emerging market in electric vehicles, back-up powerx000D
systems and portable applications taking place in Canada, and it is important that Canada remain competitive inx000D
the battery sector.
