Optical amplifiers are critical for boosting the power of high-speed optical signals in data communicationsx000D
systems. However, as the size of optical transceiver modules continuously shrinks to increase the overallx000D
capacity of networks, current optical amplifier technology, based on erbium-doped optical fiber, will no longerx000D
satisfy the size constraints of the system. For future high-speed communications systems a new technologyx000D
platform for very small form factor (VSFF) amplification is required. In this project my research team and Ix000D
will build on our expertise in compact, integrated erbium-ytterbium-doped waveguide amplifiers to provide ax000D
VSFF amplification solution together with industry partner Lumentum. Lumentum is a world leader in opticalx000D
amplifier technology and is seeking solutions for the next generation of its pluggable transceiver technology.x000D
Integrated erbium-ytterbium amplifiers can be fabricated with ultra-compact size and at low cost on siliconx000D
chips. Therefore, this project will enable Lumentum to leap forward on their optical amplifier roadmap andx000D
significantly increase their competitive advantage. Furthermore, it will lead to new knowledge about thex000D
minimum size, output power limitations, gain, signal polarization dependency and overall design andx000D
performance of integrated erbium-ytterbium optical amplifiers.
