The growth of mineral resources has become as an effective economic sector, which has led to a huge increasex000D
in mining activities in harsh environments. An underground mine is one example of such harsh environmentsx000D
that can be dangerous, unsafe, and has great risk of accidents that can damage wired/wireless communicationsx000D
infrastructure.x000D
In the aftereffect of a hazardous accident, it is essential to keep communications open with trapped miners andx000D
rescuers, and to track their positions. A reliable knowledge of a mine's conditions through a wireless sensorx000D
network would assist the organizing, planning, and accomplishment of safety operations.x000D
The employment of reliable wireless sensor networks (WSNs) offers a set of advantages including but notx000D
limited to providing a wireless capability of monitoring the state of the mine's conditions i.e.x000D
checking/monitoring without having to expose a person's life to the possibly hazardous environment.x000D
In this project, we propose to to design a mine safety system prototype using a reliable WSN with thex000D
objective of building a safety system to monitor the ambient characteristics of the mining environment ofx000D
GoldCorp Inc. The proposed prototype allows for monitoring of multiple different zones inside the mine, thex000D
protection of mine workers from excessive noise levels and the storage of measurement data for purposes ofx000D
reference. The design target of GoldCorp Inc is to address the problem of deploying a WSN with a specifiedx000D
minimum level of reliability at a minimum deployment cost.
