The proposed research project, to be undertaken in collaboration with Pratt and Whitney Canada, aims to improve our understanding of the fundamentals of the three-dimensional flow fields in the inter-turbine duct and lobed mixer components of gas-turbine engines. This objective will be achieved through an investigation based on systematic variations of the geometric and flow parameters that are deemed to dominate the flow development in these engine components. The study will make synergic use of experimental and computational techniques to execute a test matrix with a relatively large parameter set while achieving the desired spatial and temporal resolution of the flow fields in question. Improved understanding of the fluid dynamics in these engine components will provide the foundation for their further optimization towards reduced size and improved aerodynamic performance, which will support the broader goal of designing gas-turbine engines with lower weight, reduced size, and greater efficiency.x000D
