The reliability- and risk-based corrosion assessment of unpiggable oil and gas pipelines is a challenging taskx000D
because such pipelines are inaccessible to inspection tools. Various methods including the samplingx000D
excavation, hydrostatic pressure testing and above-ground survey techniques are commonly used to collectx000D
partial information about the corrosion conditions of unpiggable pipelines. Therefore, there is a need forx000D
developing a holistic approach that allows pipeline operators to effectively integrate data obtained fromx000D
different sources to obtain the complete information about the corrosion condition and facilitate the reliabilityx000D
evaluation and risk-based integrity management of unpiggable corroding pipelines. The objective of thex000D
proposed project is to carry out exploratory investigations toward the development of such an approach. Thex000D
proposed project will employ the Bayesian methodologies for updating the density and sizes of corrosionx000D
features on unpiggable pipelines based on data obtained from various sources. The research will be carried outx000D
in collaboration with the industry partner, JANA Corporation in Aurora, Ontario, and will train onex000D
postdoctoral fellow for a duration of six months. The research outcome will facilitate the integrityx000D
management of unpiggable oil and gas pipelines and improve the safety, reliability, and economical viability ofx000D
the vast oil and gas pipeline networks in Canada.
